Spring GM 5: Vascular Surgery

What we learned from Dr. Rigberg:

  • What vascular surgery is and how to become a vascular surgeon

  • The day-to-day life of a vascular surgeon

  • Longevity of surgical and vascular subspecialties

  • Vascular surgery is an innovative field with a tremendous diversity of procedures

Spring GM 4: Diving into the ED (with EMRA)

What we learned from Dr. Chung, Chase, Hessabi and Wu:

  • Walked through 1 trauma surgery and 3 emergency medicine case presentations

  • Learned how physicians narrow down diagnoses quickly in emergencies

  • Learned how different specialties and professionals collaborate in the ED

Spring GM 3: Case Western Reserve University Medical School Admissions Webinar

What we learned from Mr. McKenzie:

  • GPA and MCAT are heavily weighted, but admissions are wholistically evaluated 

  • Have a good balance of medical and non-medical extracurriculars

  • MSTP: MD/PhD is a potential option for students that love research

  • Surgery residency programs look for research in medical student applicants

  • Unique non-medicine-related experiences can make you a better physician

  • You can achieve a healthy work-life balance in medical school

  • What DGSOM looks for in its applicants

Winter GM 1:Head and Neck Surgery Residents

What we learned from Dr. Evans and Dr. Miller​

  • Head and Neck surgery is a complex and rewarding field, with a lot of overlap with multiple disciplines. 

  • Use a mnemonic to memorize the steps in taking a proper history

  • Run through a differential diagnosis, and complete tests in order to create a formal diagnosis. 

  • Do what you love, and make sure to invest in your hobbies - it will help you in the long run. 

  • Taking research years are quite rewarding.

BSUS: Finding Research and Clinical Opportunities

We covered the following topics:

- How to find and join a research lab*
- How to find and reach out to a doctor for shadowing
- Clinical experience opportunities that are available*
- Opportunities that there are to engage with the surgical field*
* both at UCLA and outside of UCLA

GM 3: Cardiothoracic Surgery Panel

What we learned from Dr. Sheimin and Dr. Handa:

  • Cardiac surgery is a demanding but potentially rewarding specialty

  • Surgery is a field with tremendous potential for innovation and discovery

  • Different medical specialties cater to different skill sets and personalities

  • Success requires hard work, talent, and being in the right place at the right time

  • Avoid distractions and commit yourself

General & Pancreatic Surgery Speaker Series

What we learned from Dr. Hines:

  • The day-to-day of a healthcare administrator & surgeon is highly variable

  • General surgery can still allow meaningful connections with patients

  • Private practices are often easier to find shadowing experience

  • Develop strong organization skills early on in your career

GM 3: Pediatric Surgery Speaker

What we learned from Dr. Sullins:

  • Explored a case study of a child with Esophageal Atresia

  • Learned about her non-traditional journey through medicine

  • Don't be afraid to change your path if you don't find something fulfilling!

  • Explore your passions before committing to one!

  • Put 100% into the activities you're in!

We painted tote bags and enjoyed boba in collaboration with Gong Cha to raise money for future networking and hands-on skills events. Thanks for your support!

GM 2:  General Surgery Speaker

What we learned from Dr. Dacey:

  • Conducted a case study of a male with hyperparathyroidism

  • Learned what considerations are made during pre-op, post-op, and recovery

  • Learned what factors indicate a successful operative outcome

  • Work-life balance can look different for different people

  • If you are equally passionate about other fields, you should explore them before committing to surgery/medicine!

  • Make long term commitments to the things you are involved in to get the most out of your experiences

Spring Surgery Mixer

At the BSUS Spring Surgery Mixer, undergraduate members connected with surgeons, residents, and medical students. We're grateful to all of our guests and members for joining us! We hope that you enjoyed meeting professionals in the surgical field as much as we did!

Surgical Skills Workshop

What we learned:

  • How to tie different kinds of surgical sutures and knots

  • How a pathway to a medical career can be structured

  • Different applications for each type of suture and knot

  • The different kinds of surgical tools that are used

GM 1: Surgeon Simulator Social

What we did:

  • Went over case study of patient who presented as hypertensive and has chest pain

  • Learned about different methods of examining the heart, such as EKG, echocardiogram, and CT scan

  • Analyzed patient EKG and found irregular heart patterns

  • Played Surgeon Simulator and completed a heart transplant!

BSUS Speaker Series: Neurology vs. Neurosurgery Speaker Panel

What we learned:

  • Conducted a case study of an infant that presents with seizures.

  • Learned about the different ways of testing and scanning for seizures, and how to treat them.

  • Learned how to read an EEG.

  • A Hemispherectomy is a surgical procedure done on the brain to help stop seizures and epilepsy.

  • Hemispherectomies are mainly done on younger kids since they have higher brain plasticity.

BSUS Surgeon Series: Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN)

What we learned:

  • It's important to take time for yourself to cope with the uncertainties of the medical path.

  • OB/GYN pathway includes 4 year residency, working in inpatient, surgical, and outpatient care, and treating pregnant and non-pregnant patients.

  • There are many different fellowships within OB/GYN.

  • Conducted a case study of an ectopic pregnancy, including how to diagnose and treat a patient with an ectopic pregnancy.

  • Learned about female reproductive anatomy.

  • OB/GYN's conduct surgery with both laparoscopic and robotic tools.

BSUS Surgeon Series: Urologic Surgery

What did we learn from Dr. Moradzadeh?

  • Urology is on the forefront of technological advancements in medicine!

  • It's important to keep a balance between working in the medical field and living your life.

  • Work hard little by little everyday in order to achieve your goal of a career in medicine.

  • Get involved with research and volunteering early on.

What did we learn from Dr. Park?

  • There are many paths to medical school and to becoming a surgeon!

  • Robotic surgery has its use cases.

  • Find a mentor early on.

  • Commit early and persevere!
